AMLE Announces Winner of Conrad Toepfer Award for the Civic Engagement of Middle School Students

Exhibition of Wonder winning project will be presented at AMLE50 Conference in November

Columbus, OH  — The Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE) has announced that Nadine Keyworth and Jon Fast of Yorkson Creek Middle School in British Columbia have been selected as the inaugural recipient of the Conrad Toepfer Award for the Civic Engagement of Middle School Students for their project, Exhibition of Wonder.

“AMLE is delighted to recognize a project that so solidly centers student voice and is easily replicable in other schools, said Stephanie Simpson, AMLE CEO, “It truly embodies what middle school is all about.”

Using the Design Thinking Framework, Exhibition of Wonder allows 8th grade students to pursue a project of their choosing while reflecting on 21st Century competencies. The project, which is run school-wide, helps deepen their understanding of their own learning process while also providing a structure for students to incorporate teacher, peer, and self-feedback in meaningful ways.

“We are honoured and thrilled that our project Exhibition of Wonder has been chosen as the inaugural winner of the Conrad Toepfer Award for the Civic Engagement of Middle School Students,” said Keyworth and Fast about the announcement, “We are excited to share the amazing work produced by Yorkson Creek Middle School students at AMLE50.”

The award, named in honor of Dr. Conrad Toepfer, recognizes initiatives that engage students in meaningful experiences that help them relate facts, skills, and concepts to their own interests and real-world problems. Dr. Toepfer was a distinguished scholar, visionary educator, and long-time proponent of middle level schools that support the creation of moral citizens who can responsibly participate in a democratic society.

Keyworth and Fast will be recognized at AMLE50: The 50th Annual Conference for Middle Level Education where they will also present the project.
