Director of Professional Development Position Description

The Director of Professional Development will report to the CEO and serve as a staff middle level education knowledgebase and oversee AMLE’s professional development strategy, including on-site professional development engagements and major conferences/events such as the Institute for Middle Level Leadership and Annual Conference.  The Director will work collaboratively with the Director for Middle Level Programs, responsible for the Successful Middle School and Schools of Distinction programs, to ensure a seamless professional learning experience for AMLE members and schools.

Position Duties

  • Initiate and set goals for professional development aligned with the strategic objectives of AMLE
  • Manage AMLE’s professional development strategy, proactively identify member needs and working collaboratively with staff and leadership toward solutions
  • Develop and lead professional development engagements, expanding AMLE’s reach and promoting middle grades best practices across schools that educate 10-15 year old students
  • Conduct outreach to raise awareness of AMLE membership and key offerings
  • Presenting on behalf of AMLE at local and national meetings
  • Manage AMLE’s cadre of professional development presenters, recruiting new experts and assigning cadre to engagement requests as appropriate
  • Oversee the content strategy of AMLE’s major conferences and events, including serving as the Faculty Chair for the Institute for Middle Level Leadership
  • Foster and grow AMLE’s relationships with middle grades schools, AMLE partners, and affiliate organizations, and gather examples of exceptional practices from the field
  • Advise the CEO on emerging trends in middle level education and provide input on the organization’s strategic direction and initiatives
  • Develop a budget for the program and collaborate with the Accounting Manager to monitor and grow financial performance

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field. Master’s degree or doctorate highly preferred.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience working in a school or district encompassing the middle grades (grades 5-9) or with young adolescents (defined as ages 10-15), preferably with significant time in an administrator role (principal, assistant principal, assistant superintendent, superintendent, etc.).
  • Has worked directly in a school or district/central office within the past three (3) years.
  • A strong passion for middle level education and expertise
  • A strong expertise in middle grades best practice and a track record of successfully implementing middle school model concepts in a school or across a district.
  • Exceptional written and oral presentation skills
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills
  • An analytical mindset with great problem-solving abilities
  • A team-oriented personality and the ability to be agile as is necessary with a small staff
  • Highly professional demeanor
  • Ability to travel frequently (likely weekly)

Preferred Experience

  • Knowledge of and experience with AMLE and its foundational position paper, The Successful Middle School: This We Believe
