Thanks, NMSA!
by Audrye W., Friendswood Junior High student
When walking into a huge convention for teachers, the first thought to cross through my mind was, what the heck am I going to do here? It was exactly the kind of place where junior high students aren't comfortable: large open space with plenty of room to get lost and unknown adults staring at us. What I was definitely not expecting was teachers, counselors, speakers, superintendents, principals, and many more educational professionals who truly were very passionate about schools and students. And what brought them to this place, from all over the world, was the one thing they all had in common: love for their students.
From interviewing speakers to exhibitors and then back to just the normal everyday teacher, I realized how much I took for granted. My teachers love me and just by listening to them and learning something, I am loving them back. These people here at the convention have committed their lives to my fellow peers and me. They understand the future is in our hands and want us to make it the best future ever.
But I also realized why I take it for granted while I was down in the exhibit hall. For example, Walden Media makes movies like Narnia and Charlotte's Web, the ones everyone loves. One of the representatives brought to my attention that these movies are made to be educational. Teacherweb.com has designed the coolest website for teachers and students. It's easy to use and fun at the same time! Teachers can upload videos, music, pictures, lessons, homework, and much more, just for the students to use. Qwizdom is an organization that sells new technology to schools, in order to make practice tests and learning more fun for me! There were more vendors than we could see in a day, all using the same tactics—making learning easier and exciting. It never dawned on me how many behind-the-scenes people are involved, helping my teachers bring these inspiring lessons, games, and opportunities to our classrooms.
Thank you, NMSA, and all the participants for giving me your time, and sharing with me your ideas. You truly have inspired me to influence others the way you have influenced me. I had a great time listening to you. I would also like to thank the teachers at my school, and other schools, that listen to their students and appreciate our youth. Together we can shape the future. |
