Cultural Dimensions of Social and Emotional Learning
Frances Portillo
Come explore the intersection of social and emotional learning and cultural diversity. Learn how both are present in all classrooms and need to be addressed in all aspects of education. Understanding both cultural differences and social and emotional health will lead to a classroom of students who are ready to learn and confident to succeed. This session will provide hands-on understanding and practical ideas for the classroom.

Developing 21st Century Skills Through Design Thinking
Aaron Wilson-Ahlstrom
Creativity, innovation, critical thinking and problem solving must be developed in all young adolescents, but few schools have an intentional process to equip them with these 21st Century skills. Attendees will explore Design Thinking with coaches from an urban middle school implementing the approach, experience a Design Challenge, and plan a project that demonstrates how students can develop these skills when learning is organized around the process of developing solutions to a design problem.
