Enhancing Literacy for All Students

Articles in this issue focus on literacy instruction in all areas of the curriculum. Zenkov and associates describe a photo elicitation strategy that motivated urban English language learners (ELLs) to write about their lives, and Bolos reviews a variety of classroom-tested strategies for teaching ELLs. Cieciersk and Bintz describe ways to use chants and cadences to enhance literacy learning across the curriculum. Writing from a critical-multicultural perspective, Montero explains how urban students wrote about their lives in one-word poems and on traveling scrawled walls, and Casey describes how students in multimodal learning clubs use a variety of texts to learn important content. Harmon and associates urge teachers to focus on four aspects of literacy instruction to enhance engagement: choice, accessibility, rereading, and supported reading. The issue concludes with a review of research literature related to professional learning communities in middle level schools.
