One of the first Nationally Board Certified teachers in America, Rick brings innovation, energy, validity, and high standards to his presentations and his instructional practice, which includes 30 years teaching math, science, English, physical education, health, and history, and coaching teachers. Rick's work has been reported in numerous media, including ABC's Good Morning America, Hardball with Chris Matthews, National Geographic, and Good Housekeeping magazines, What Matters Most: Teaching for the 21st Century, and The Washington Post.

With his substantive presentations, sense of humor, and unconventional approaches, he's been asked to present to teachers and administrators in all 50 states, Canada, China, Europe, Japan, Vietnam, Korea, Australia, the Middle East, and at the White House. He is a seasoned veteran of many webcasts, and he is Disney's American Teacher Awards 1996 Outstanding English Teacher of the Nation. He won the 2008 James P. Garvin award from the New England League of Middle Schools for Teaching Excellence, Service, and Leadership, and he has been a consultant for National Public Radio, USA Today, Court TV, and the Smithsonian Institution's Natural Partners Program and their search for the Giant Squid.

He lives in Herndon, Virginia with his wife and two children, one in high school, one in college, where he is currently working on his first young adult fiction novel.

Cheryl Mizerny is a veteran educator with more than 25 years of experience–most at the middle school level. She began her career in special education, became a teacher consultant and adjunct professor of educational psychology, and currently teaches sixth grade English in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. David Shepard

David Shepard

A native of rural North Carolina and a product of public education in four states, Dave Shepard brings experience, common sense, and practicality to any educational gathering. He has dealt with middle and high school students for all of his 40 years in education. His experience includes teaching, coaching, curriculum and program design, and administration. Since his retirement in 1999, he has devoted his time and energy to helping schools become more efficient and effective for all teachers and students.

Dave currently manages his own educational consulting firm, "The Middle Matters and More," in Lexington, Kentucky. He works actively with SREB, AMLE, KMSA, and many state departments of education.

Known primarily as a practitioner, he has presented at more than 40 state and national conferences. He has assisted school districts in 47 states and two foreign countries in developing and refining their educational programs by providing quality professional development and teacher in-services. Dave has been recognized as Coach of The Year, Principal of The Year and most recently received his highest honor, The President's Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Kentucky Middle School Association.

He has authored or co-authored articles for the NAESP web page, NASSP's Principal Leadership publication, The Committee for Children, and the Virginia Journal of Education. He most recently co-authored a book with Sherrel Bergmann and Judy Brough for Eye on Education publishers about improving parental support in schools. The programs Dave delivers are characterized by a high-energy format, a simple yet practical style, a down to earth sense of humor, and an easy-going manner. These elements make the programs both informative and digestible.

Santo Pino

Santo Pino

Santo Pino has spent a major part of his career working with schools and districts concerning how they implement the middle school model. His work as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, director of middle and high school programs, district trainer for principals, and various executive roles with AMLE makes Santo adept at helping with middle level school improvement. He has done tremendous work with AMLE's School Improvement Assessment and staff development focused on the results of the assessment. He has worked with district and building level administrators around the nation to improve their middle school models from the ground up. He has presented on middle level topics at state, national, and international conferences, including workshops for the Department of Defense Middle Schools in Italy, Germany, and Turkey. He was one of the original faculty members for the AMLE Leadership Institute from 2001 to 2011.

Gretchen Goodman spent 34 years as a public school teacher. She was involved with children who had learning and behavioral problems. Gretchen was an instructional support teacher, an RtI coordinator, and assisted in her district's professional development.

Bobb Darnell

Bobb Darnell

Dr. Bobb Darnell is president of Achievement Strategies, Inc. and an advocate for high student achievement and daily professional growth. He served as director of staff support for more than 1,700 staff members in a northwest Illinois school district and taught for more than 25 years. Bobb has served on the board of trustees for the National and Illinois Staff Development Councils, Illinois International Branch of the Dyslexia Association, and has been a member of numerous national and state task forces and committees. He is the author of ASCD's 2002 action tool kit—A Guide for Instructional Leaders, and has written four staff development guides for Wavelength's award winning educational comedy videos. Joel Brodsky

Joel Brodsky

Dr. Brodsky's formal education culminated with a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Administration from New York University (1992). He has received various honors including Supervisor of the Year in Special Education and Educator of the Year in Special Education. In addition, Dr. Brodsky has served as president of several professional organizations including the International Council for Learning Disabilities, Administrators Roundtable Association (New York University), New York State Council for Learning Disabilities and the Jericho Supervisors Association.

After a thirty-six year career in public education, primarily as an administrator at the middle school level in the Jericho School District, Dr. Brodsky became a scheduling consultant. In that role he has worked directly with over three hundred and fifty schools, around the country, helping them implement their educational philosophies. Currently he is working with the Executive leadership Institute of New York City as a Scheduling Consultant providing workshops, mentoring and coaching New York City administrators. He has also spoken at numerous conferences and seminars, including AMLE, NASSP, and NELMS on the topic of school scheduling.

In his work with school leaders, directly and through conferences and seminars, he has offered professional development and mentoring for the design and construction of cost-effective schedules built from the needs of each individual student and aimed at fostering the highest levels of achievement. He has also stressed the integration of students with special needs and the ability of staff to select varied models that best foster the success of their students. Finally, as evidenced in his presentations for AMLE and other organizations and in a visit to any of the schools he has mentored, his work continues to foster the belief that systemic change is essential and that school leaders can implement change in programs and schedules in order to maximize student growth.

Dr. Brodsky maintains that middle schools can foster the highest levels of student growth by moving to innovative scheduling models and stimulating the highest levels of teacher performance.
