1. Name the key responsibilities in your current role
Currently I am science department chair and union president for district local. I teach 4 middle school science classes, help lead the curriculum updates to address NGSS while also balancing union business and contract negotiations.

2. Describe either your professional preparation, experience or achievements
I earned a BS degree in Group Science w/ minor in Education and MA in Middle Level Education. I have been teaching for 17 years in a suburban middle school teaching science in grades 6-8.

3. Describe the biggest challenge you're currently facing in middle level education
The biggest challenge I am facing is the diversity of experiences and expectations of my student population. With the wide array of student experiences it is hard to find hooks that engage ALL students. Many students come to school to learn but many also come just to socialize, with no learning supports at home. It is easy to teach eager learners, extremely difficult to teach those that see school as pointless.

4. Share what you do for fun when not in school
I spend time with my wife and kids. We have a cottage on a lake in Northern Michigan where we enjoy water sports and nature. During the school year we are busy keeping up with all their sport activities.

5. Tell us why you are a member of AMLE
AMLE connects like minded educators that teach in the middle. It is a informational conduit for all things middle level educators need to know. I feel being an AMLE member helps me stay current with my pedagogy and keep up with research.
